Diversity Statment

ABNS STATEMENT ON DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION The American Board of Neurological Surgery includes a culture where member diplomates and all employees integrate diversity and inclusion throughout its activities and obligations. We respect and appreciate our similarities and differences; they enable us to better serve our patients, one another, and our global communities. We stand with the medical community to decry the sickness of racism and other forms of discrimination whether they be based on religion, ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity or other factors. We acknowledge that systemic racism in this country damages the health, welfare, safety, and very lives of people of color and therefore our whole society. We affirm our commitment to identify and work to eliminate the impact of racism and other forms of discrimination in our organization, our neurosurgical profession, and our country. To these ends, the ABNS actively promotes full participation in Board activities by all neurosurgeons, without regard to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity. The ABNS upholds the highest standards of leadership in our profession with its strong commitment to multiculturalism and equal opportunity, respecting and nurturing the diversity of its membership. It recognizes that specific recruitment and development of Diplomates from diverse and underrepresented groups is essential to enhancing the strength of the ABNS. The ABNS underscores this commitment to diversity by ensuring that meaningful positions of leadership are held by Diplomates from all constituent groups. Nominations for leadership positions should be based on individual qualifications, expertise, and ability to contribute. The ABNS and its committees shall acknowledge diversity, equity, and inclusion by developing measures of progress in mentoring leaders of different backgrounds in all its activities.
